Not a fan myself either. I think people hear V8 and RWD and think they are cheap 4-door Mustangs. But to me, they are heavy, huge (on the outside), surprisingly small on the inside, soft, and certainly not very attractive. I mean, I could see where some people could appreciate them, but they are definitely not for me.

Why do people like them? Because they’re affordable V8 RWD sedans. Because they are more than reliable, they’re tough. Because they have plenty of room inside and in the trunk. Because even though they’re slow, they’re plenty of fun to drive and absorb bumps extremely well. Because they were the last hold out for the ideal that sedans were supposed to be V8, RWD, reliable, tough, roomy, and comfortable on bumpy roads.
Basically, they’re a reminder of the large sedans of the past without all of the negatives of owning something actually old like a Galaxie.
As in Ford Crown Victorias. They went on way past their best before date....
The more interesting question: Why do you even care enough to post that you do hate them? It’s not like they were the only option for a sedan, or a RWD car, or whatever combination.

But to me, they are heavy, huge (on the outside), surprisingly small on the inside
They’re really not that huge on the outside, a 5th Gen Camaro is comparable in everything but length, and you can fit 6 people inside a Vic if it has benches front and rear. And the trunk is properly large.
As far as exterior size vs interior room, it’s certainly not the worst option out there.

Because... They’re reliable when maintained. They don’t break easily. They’re reliable. They’re decently fast.
It’s no secret that it’s heavy. That it floats like a land yacht. But you know what? It’ll be easier to rip a burn out or donut than a Cadillac. It’s fun, it’s practical and it’s bombproof.

My parents owned 2 panthers when I was a kid, my grandparents owned 2 at the same time. I didn’t realize how much I liked them until I experienced some other cars (and got to drive a panther by myself).
They’re different than almost anything else, but that’s also why some people like them.

surprisingly small on the inside,
Nope, they are huge on the inside too. My roommate in college had a CVPI and we were able to fit 7 college age males in it, with everybody sitting on a seat. No, it was not comfortable, but that was more from the 350 lb 6'5" member of our group taking up enough space for 2 people. The front bench was almost uncomfortably wide and was tough to reach both armrests at the same time.

And a Panther is a pickup with a trunk instead of a bed, and enough lower that it’s more stable on the road and doesn’t sway in the wind as much. Some people like that.

I’ve never got that feeling. Honestly, I don’t think how many college students fit is a good measure, we got 10 in an Accord...
My take is that for as big as the car is, it is not roomy. It could stand to have a lot less hood and a lot more cabin.

They were pretty much the last of the classic american sedans. It’s a nostalgia thing. That’s why old people bought them.
As far as how long it was made, it survived mostly because it was ideal for fleet sales. Proven technology, robust construction, easy to repair, and it was built for long enough that prices were low and parts were plenty.
Ethusiasts love them because on top of the previous reasons, they are one of if not the cheapest ways into V8 RWD ownership.

I’m dailying a Galaxie at least partly because I’m not worried about accident rates in the local area, true. But - the carb has been quite well-behaved, I get pickup truck-like mileage, the points were replaced with electronic by a previous owner, and the 289 can push the car from zero to fifty effortlessly in 2nd. For what would I need more gears?

Given the very close to Panther and Galaxie dimensions of the first really modern ‘55 Ford and the introduction of the Y-block the year before, making 272ci in ‘55, you could say there was an unbroken string of consistently sized smallblock big family sedans for 56 years. That’s an achievement.

I guess I don’t really have any other full size sedans to compare it to, but coming from compact sedans and coupes, and my 70's barge with an even longer hood, it just seemed like acres of room and a nice airy cabin.

Carbs are ok, until they aren’t. Then they’re a pain. Pickup truck like mileage is pretty bad (I just bought a pickup, so I know for sure). You can hit 50mph in 2nd, but how fast is the engine turning at 75mph? And are the brakes up for stopping that much car at those speeds?
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love one, they’re just not equal to a newer car when it comes to safety and livability.

I’m a MASSIVE fan of box body Panthers (‘79-’91), and I’ve owned several. ‘92+ doesn’t do much for me, personally, but I can certainly see why people like them. The Merc Marauder was on my list of dream cars until I became disenfranchised with Ford’s modular engines.

All pretty true, I’m just saying that in my circumstances the mild rough edges (14mpg, etc.) are ones I’m willing to compromise on, and the potential major rough edges (traffic danger) are minimized. Admitted, the brakes are a very cheap and easy thing to improve than overall crash ruggedness, but in his own way Issigonis was right about avoiding accidents as the biggest margin of safety - the sharp edges and chrome mean it gets noticed, and the noticed car gets a wide berth.
I’ve driven it in Atlanta traffic in the summer. Not something I want to make a regular thing of, but it’s not cataclysmic by any means.

Some people like them mainly because it’s what they’re familiar with.
Once at a car rental agency, there was a guy ahead of me who had reserved a Camry... and they wanted to upgrade him to something else but all he wanted was a Camry because he was familiar with Camrys and he specifically reserved a Camry and would they please get him the Camry he reserved right now!
Note that he wouldn’t even take a Lexus ES350... which is the car I got upgraded to.

“Nope, they are huge on the inside too.”
Unless it’s it’s a long wheelbase Lincoln version, the amount of space inside is nothing special. Grew up with a Grand Marquis and spent a lot of time sitting in the middle with that big transmission hump.

The seats hurt my back enough to dislocate ribs, the seating position would make my calf cramp, if you wore gym shorts in it the cloth could literally grab and pull them down when you sat down. It got 16mpg, the transmission was dying at 60,000 miles, the aluminum wheels were a know weak point and my sister bent and cracked two or them. The shocks were blown at 60,000 miles, the alternator died at 50,000 miles, it handled badly, was slow and everything combined mad it painful just to drive. It was also beige with a beige interior which was nauseating.
